Violence Introduction

Mahatma Gandhi once said "I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the evil it does is permanent ." The quote states that violence is bad because the good in it isn't big enough to forget about the bad it did. What this quote is stating is true because you can see the damages war does to country. This can be clearly seen in the book A Stone in My Hand by Cathryn Clinton. Due to the violence going on in Palestine Malaak lost her father. In this novel violence is never the answer in anything, Malaak is deeply impacted by the death of her father, and its dangerous to even play in the streets without the fear of a soldier pointing a gun at you.

I Am character

I Am Malaak Abed Atieh (A Stone in My Hand)
I am Malaak Abed Atieh
I wonder where my father is
I hear the Abdo bird
I see Israeli soldiers
I want peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis
I am Malaak Abed Atieh

I pretend I can fly to my fathers prison cell
I feel ugly
I touch my hair that I don't like
I worry about my brother
I cry whenever my mom tells me my father is dead
I am Malaak Abed Atieh

I understand I have to stay patient
I say my prayers
I dream about my father coming back
I try accept the fact that he is gone
I hope my brother doesn't get killed like my father did
I am Malaak Abed Atieh

"A Stone in My Hand" by Cathryn Clinton is about a family living in Gaza City. My topic is about violence and I chose this book because it deals with the violence going on in the country. Malaak, is an 11 years old whom lives with her mother, older sister Hend, and her older brother Hamid in Gaza City. It's been a month since her father to look for a job as a mechanic in Israel. There are tensions between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Every day she imagines herself flying to the prison cell where she believes her father is being held in. Each day becomes a struggle for her whenever her mother tell her that her father is no longer alive. It only gets worse whenever her brother Hamid and his friend Tariq join in a hate group. Whenever the rest of the family finds out about it they knows they're in danger, and they try to get them out of the hate group. But they weren't successful with trying to take him out. Then, Hamid gets shot and is rushed to the hospital but is he going to live or die?

"A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles."
-Christopher Reeve
  ("Superman")

A hero is someone who achieves more than they can. They go out of their way to help someone. I agree with it, because you cares bout someone it doesn't matter what it takes you will help them. Whenever my grandma gets super sick everyone in the family goes out of their way to help her. We change the way we eat so she won't feel left out. Our family from far comes just to visit her and see if she's getting better. We stay all day with her just to make sure she's taking her medicine. We also comfort her whenever she is feeling really sad, so we try to make her laugh and smile.
